3.  Ways to get ready for 253

• Solidworks academic license for students in UBC Engineering Physics
• Looking into the 40hr Student Machine Shop course:
  • Sign up for a PHAS computer account
  • Check online to see the SMS course registeration page (need a working PHAS account)
• Read up on the TINAH board
   
  • This is based on the Wiring board, a close cousin of the Arduino boards that have become quite popular the last few years.
  • Arduino Board is avaialble for $30 online from Robotshop.ca, or in town at Lee’s Electronics on Main St.
• Learn from online vendors
  • Newark Electronics – our course sponsor, and seller of the widest selection of electronics components.
  • sparkfun.com, Product vendor with a great project listings and online forum
  • robotshop.ca Product vendor in Canada

4.  Learning how stuff is made, how to take it apart.

• Fundamentals of Design – Alex Slocum at MIT runs the PERG lab, and led the MECH 2.007 course for years.  This guide is a fantastic  (and relatively thorough) introduction to all mechanical design elements.

• makezine.com Step-by-step guides and projects.
• instructables.com
• ifixit.com Teardowns See the insides of new products within days of product release (iphones, xbox’s, etc.etc.)  The Pleo dinosaur Teardown is particularly good.
