3. Ways to get ready for 253
- Arduino kits are now avaialble for sign-out from the UBC Library! (same kits used in APSC 150 tutorials)
- Solidworks academic license for students in UBC Engineering Physics
- Learn from online vendors
- Newark Electronics – our course sponsor, and seller of the widest selection of electronics components.
- sparkfun.com, Product vendor with a great project listings and online forum
- robotshop.ca Product vendor in Canada
- McMaster-Carr – Product vendor for mechanical items. Hundreds of thousands of mechanical things. Everything. You. Could. Ever.Imagine.
- Read up on the TINAH board
- This is based on the Wiring board, a close cousin of the Arduino boards that have become quite popular the last few years.
- Arduino Board is avaialble for $30 online from Robotshop.ca, or in town at Lee’s Electronics on Main St.
- Learning how stuff is made, how to take it apart.
- Fundamentals of Design – Alex Slocum at MIT runs the PERG lab, and led the MECH 2.007 course for years. This guide is a fantastic (and relatively thorough) introduction to all mechanical design elements.
- howstuffworks.com Self-explanatory
- makezine.com Step-by-step guides and projects.
- instructables.com
- ifixit.com Teardowns See the insides of new products within days of product release (iphones, xbox’s, etc.etc.) The Pleo dinosaur Teardown is particularly good.
